Edison Vicente Méndez Méndez (born March 16, 1979 in El Juncal , a village in the Chota Valley , which politically belongs to the canton of Ibarra in the Imbabura province ) is an Ecuadorian football player . The 1.75 m tall midfielder is considered an all-rounder, as he can be used both as a game designer and defensively as well as centrally, on the left and on the right side. He played for PSV Eindhoven from 2006 to 2009 and is currently active for LDU Quito in Ecuador. He is a regular player in the Ecuadorian national team .

Club soccer

Méndez began his career in 1996 with Deportivo Quito in Ecuador, for which he made his first division debut in 1997. In 2003 he switched to city rivals El Nacional on loan before he was committed to the 2003/04 Clausura tournament from Irapuato in Mexico in January 2004 .

At Irapuato he became a regular player and scored 5 goals in 16 games. After the tournament, the Mexican Primera División was downsized and Irapuato lost his right to participate due to the vote of the club presidents. It therefore did not take part in the Apertura tournament 2004/05; Méndez was given to Santos Laguna . Here he could not finally prevail. He started only six times and scored two goals.

For the 2005 season he returned to Ecuador. With his club LDU Quito he won the Apertura championship in 2005. At the end of July 2006 he moved to PSV Eindhoven , initially on loan. On his first appearance for PSV, he scored two goals in the championship game against Willem II Tilburg for a 3-1 win. In his second assignment, a Champions League game against Liverpool (0-0), he was voted Man of the Match . In November 2006, PSV also prematurely acquired Méndez 'transfer rights. Méndez was able to celebrate the Dutch championship in his first season at PSV. He himself scored five goals in 26 appearances. Also in the 2007/08 season he was Dutch champions with Eindhoven, where he contributed one goal in 20 games. In his last season in Eindhoven (2008/09) he scored three goals in 26 games this season.

In the summer of 2009 he moved back to Ecuador to LDU Quito and won the Copa Sudamericana 2009 with his club . In July 2010 he moved to Brazil to Atletico Mineiro. In January 2011 he returned to Ecuador, where he played for CS Emelec in Guayaquil for a year . In 2012 he joined LDU Quito again.

National team

In the national team Méndez made his debut on March 8, 2000 in a friendly against Honduras. So far he has played 92 international matches, scoring 15 goals (as of April 2011).

Among his goals was the winning goal to beat Croatia 1-0 at the 2002 World Cup , Ecuador's first win at a World Cup. Méndez was voted Man of the Match . On November 17, 2004 , he scored the decisive 1-0 win against Brazil in a qualifier for the 2006 World Cup .

He was also a regular in the right midfield at the 2006 World Cup and prepared the goals for 2-0 and 3-0 in Ecuador's second round match against Costa Rica.

He also took part in the (for Ecuador little successful) tournaments for the Copa America in 2001 , 2004 and 2007 .

At the beginning of 2008 he surprisingly announced his resignation from the national team due to "exhaustion" from traveling from the Netherlands to South America for national team games. In May 2008 he reversed this resignation and returned to the national team, which had only played a friendly against Haiti in the meantime.
