Edmond Alphandéry

Edmond Gérard Alphandéry (born September 2, 1943 in Avignon , Département Vaucluse ) is a former French economist , university professor , business manager and politician of the Union pour la démocratie française (UDF), the Union de Center (UcD) and most recently the Union pour un Mouvement Populaire (UMP), who was a member of the National Assembly and minister for the economy between 1993 and 1995 .

Life

After attending school, Alphandéry began studying at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris and completed a year of study abroad at the University of Chicago between 1967 and 1968 on a scholarship from the Fulbright program . After completing his studies with the Agrégé d'économie politique in 1971, he earned a doctorate in economics and then took on a professorship in economics at the University of Panthéon-Assas .

He began his political career in local politics when he was elected in 1976 to succeed Lucien Boissin by the DVG as a representative of the canton Longué-Jumelles in the General Council of the Maine-et-Loire department . He was a member of the General Council for 32 years until he was replaced by Michel Ruault from the UMP in 2008. In March 1977 he was also elected mayor of Longué-Jumelles as the successor to Robert Châtel and held this position for 31 years until he was replaced by Frédéric Mortier from the Divers droite (DVD) in March 2008.

In the elections of March 19, 1978 Alphandéry for the Union pour la démocratie française (UDF) was elected for the first time as a member of the National Assembly and represented the interests of the Maine-et-Loire department in this until May 1, 1993.

On March 29, 1993 Alphandéry was appointed Minister of the Economy (Ministre de l'économie) in the Balladur cabinet and held this ministerial office until May 18, 1995. He was also the successor to Jean Sauvage between 1994 and his replacement by André Lardeux in 1995, President of the General Council of the Maine-et-Loire department.

After leaving the government, he was the successor to Gilles Ménage between 1995 and his replacement by François Roussely in 1998 as CEO of the energy supply company Électricité de France (EDF). He was also a member of the Trilateral Commission think tank from 1996 to 2014 , of which he has been an honorary member since then, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the insurer CNP Assurances between July 1998 and his replacement by Jean-Paul Faugère in June 2012 . Since July 2014 he has been chairman of the Brussels- based think tank Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS).
