Edu Dracena (born May 18, 1981 in Dracena , São Paulo ), actually Eduardo Luís Abonízio de Souza , is a Brazilian football player who also has Italian citizenship. The central defender is under contract with FC Santos .

Edu Dracena began his career in 1995 as a youth player with Guarani FC from Campinas . There he played his first game as a professional soccer player in 1999. Thereafter, Olympiacos Piraeus borrowed Edu Dracena for half a season in the 2002/03 season, but he only made sporadic appearances (five league games). After the short European stint he returned to Guarani FC; this transferred him for the 2003 season to Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte . At Cruzeiro he celebrated winning the Brazilian Championship and the Brazilian Cup in 2003. In the same year he was elected to the South American Golden Team .

At the end of summer 2006 he moved again across the Atlantic for a fee of 5.7 million euros, this time to the traditional Turkish club Fenerbahçe Istanbul . There he signed a four-year contract. In his first year he became a Turkish champion . On May 19, 2007 he scored the 500th goal for Fenerbahçe against city rivals Galatasaray and celebrated his first goal for Fenerbahçe. His contract was dissolved at the beginning of the 2009/10 season, Fenerbahçe SK had too many foreign players under contract and had to part with Edu because of the foreigner regulation in the Süper Lig . He was also injured.

Then Edu Dracena returned to his homeland in Brazil and joined FC Santos at the end of September 2009 . There he signed a contract until December 31, 2012. In the 2010 season he won the Brazilian Cup with the team . He scored an important goal in the final second leg. In 2011 he won the Copa Libertadores with Santos , the most important title in South American club football .

National team

After playing for the U20 and U23 national team, he was called up to the Brazilian senior team in 2003 and was part of the Brazil squad in the 2003 Confederation Cup , but he did not play a single game in the tournament. His first international match in the Seleção took place on May 20, 2004 in a friendly against France . While Carlos Dunga was the national coach of Brazil, Edu Dracena belonged steadily in the expanded squad of the Seleção . Edu Dracena has played three full international matches so far.
