The Eduard Strelzow Stadium ( Russian Стадион имени Эдуарда Стрельцова ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Russian capital Moscow . It is the home ground of the Torpedo Moscow football club .

history

The facility, which opened in 1960, is located in the southern administrative district in the Danilowski district on the banks of the Moscow River . It was built for ZIL , a former manufacturer of trucks , buses and passenger cars. The building has been named since 1997 after the torpedo player Eduard Strelzow (1937–1990), who was nicknamed "Russian Pelé ". The stadium now has two uncovered stands on the long sides and offers space for 13,450 spectators. Initially it only had one main grandstand in the east. In 1976 the rank in the west was added. From 1977 to the mid-1990s, Torpedo Moscow played its home games here until they moved to the Luzhniki Olympic Stadium . In 1998 it was converted into a seating stadium. Torpedo has been playing here again since 2009. In the meantime, the sports facility was also used by FC Moscow and FC Torpedo-ZIL Moscow, which was re-established by ZIL in 2003 .

Currently the stadium is in poor condition and does not meet the requirements of both UEFA and FIFA for international matches. On April 26, 2019, Torpedo Moscow announced the modernization of the sports facility. The design by the French firm Michel Rémon & Associés was selected for implementation. Michel Rémon was u. a. responsible for the renovation plans for the Stade Auguste-Delaune in Reims in the 2000s . Plans call for construction to start in the second quarter of 2020. A construction time of two and a half years is expected. A slight increase in audience capacity to 15,070 is planned.
