Edward Blyth

Edward Blyth (born December 23, 1810 in London , † December 27, 1873 ibid) was an English zoologist and ornithologist . He is known as one of the founders of Indian zoology.

Live and act

Blyth was born in London on December 23, 1810 . In 1841 he traveled to India to become the curator of the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal . He began by updating the catalogs of the museum and published in 1849 a catalog over the birds of the Asiatic Society ( Catalog of the Birds of the Asiatic Society ). He couldn't do much field work himself, but he described many species of birds that he got from Hume, Tickell, Swinhoe and others. He remained a curator until 1862, at which time his poor health forced him to return to England. In 1881 his work The Natural History of the Cranes was published.

Dedication names

Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte honored him in 1854 with the generic name Blythipicus , a name that is composed of his name and the Latin Picus for woodpecker . With a subspecies of Schlichtprinie ( Prinia inornata blythi ( Bonaparte , 1850)) he had recognized him already 1850th The Somali star ( Onychognathus blythii ) was dedicated to him by Ernst Hartert in 1859 . Alfred Russel Wallace dedicated it in 1864 to Psittaculirostris desmarestii blythii , a subspecies of the marigold parrot , as this pointed out to him the differences to the species already described. In 1882, Major John Biddulph named a subspecies of the white- browedimp , which is now known as Carpodacus thura blythi , in his honor. The subspecies Cyornis rufigastra blythi of the mangrove blue flycatcher was introduced by Christian Gottfried Giebel in 1875 as a synonym for Cyornis simplex Blyth in 1870. His name can also be found in the name of a subspecies of the gray-headed starfish ( Sturnia malabarica blythii ( Jerdon , 1845)). In 1870 Thomas Caverhill Jerdon paid tribute to him again in the name of Blythtragopan ( Tragopan blythii ( Jerdon , 1870)). Jules Verreaux recognized it in 1871 in the subspecies Trochalopteron affine blythii of the black- headed jay .

Moreover Blyth came in the definition Phoenicopterus blythi Bonaparte 1857 (corresponding to the lesser flamingo ( Phoeniconaias minor )), Alcippe poioicephala blythi Collin & Hartert 1927 (corresponding to the Graukopfalcippe ( Alcippe poioicephala Karenni )), Muscicapa blythi Rothschild , 1921 (corresponding to the Elsterschnäpper ( ficedula westerwelle Manni collini )), Phaiopicos blythii Malherbe , 1849 (corresponding to the Rufous Woodpecker ( Micropternus brachyurus )), Gorsachius melanolophus blythi Hachisuka 1926 (corresponding to nominate the shaft heron ( Gorsachius melanolophus )) and Sylvia Curruca blythi Ticehurst & Whistler , 1933 (corresponding to the nominate the Klappergrasmücke ( Sylvia curruca )) honor.

Furthermore, described in 1870 Francis Day to the mountain catfish belonging kind Myersglanis blythii , 1876 William Theobald with Mocoa blythii a synonym of the skinks belonging subspecies Scincella ladacensis himalayana , 1867 Franz Steindachner with Euprepes blythi a synonym of belonging to the skinks kind Asymblepharus Himalayanus , 1859 Robert Fisher Tomes the little mouse- eared mouse ( Myotis blythii ), 1853 the species Rhinophis blythii belonging to the tails and 1920 George Albert Boulenger the species Limnonectes blythii belonging to the frogs .
