Ed Bryant 2016

Edward "Ed" Winslow Bryant Jr. (born August 27, 1945 in White Plains , New York ; died February 10, 2017 in Denver ) was an American writer of science fiction and horror literature.

Life

Bryant was the son of Edward Winslow Bryant and Anne Harter, nee Van Kleeck. When he was six months old, the family moved to a farm in Wyoming where Bryant grew up. When he was about 10, the farm had to be abandoned, his father became a migrant worker and eventually a postal worker in Wheatland , Wyoming, and his mother worked for a lawyer. Bryant studied on a scholarship at the University of Wyoming , where he graduated in 1967 with an MA in literature. The title of his thesis was Imagery of the Path in the Novels of Hermann Hesse . He had previously worked as a disc jockey at KYCN Radio in Wheatland (1961–1963) and as a news editor at KOWB Radio in Laramie (1965). From 1968 to 1969 he was a travel agent at Blevins Manufacturing and in 1970 a teacher at Sherwood Oaks Experimental High School .

In 1968 and 1969 he attended the Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop for aspiring SF writers, where he met Harlan Ellison , with whom he wrote his only novel, an adaptation of Ellison's screenplay for the pilot of the Canadian SF television series The Starlost . Further adaptations were planned, but they did not materialize. His first short story was published in New Worlds # 197 in January 1970 and from then on Bryant worked as a freelance writer, initially struggling to sell his work to magazines such as Paris Review and North American Review , which his stories were too popular In the direction of SF, while the SF magazines, conversely, had their stories too literary. In 1972 he moved to Denver, Colorado, where he founded the Northern Colorado Writers Workshops based on the model of the Clarion Workshops and directed it for many years. A first collection of his work, Among the Dead and Other Events Leading Up to the Apocalypse , appeared in 1973 , and in 1979 he received the Nebula Award for the short story Stone (German title: Die Schere zerbricht am Stein ) .

Edward Bryant 1989

He remained productive as a short story writer until 1999. He had suffered from type 1 diabetes for a long time and was diagnosed with advanced osteoporosis in 2000 after breaking a bone in his shoulder while sleeping. In the years that followed, he wrote mainly book reviews and SF convention reports for Locus magazine . Financially troubled by the complications and costs of his diabetes and a bypass operation in 2004, his friends started a crowdfunding campaign in 2010 to help him.

He died in 2017 at the age of 71.

About the objects of the fantastic and his relation to them he said:

"I believe the wondrous exists. But it's really a metaphor for some very physical, nitty-gritty realities. Certainly while I'm writing, in that act of creating people and worlds, I suspend my sense of disbelief. I believe in the things I'm writing about. "

“I believe in the existence of the wonderful. But it's a metaphor for some very hard, very basic facts. But while writing, while inventing characters and worlds, I leave my disbelief aside. I believe in what I write about. "

Awards

In addition to the awards mentioned, works by Bryant have been nominated many times, including the Hugo Award , World Fantasy Award , Bram Stoker Award , Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award and Locus Award .
