Edward Habich

Edward Habich (also Georg Eduard Habich , George Edward Habich , born July 7, 1818 in Veckerhagen near Kassel , † September 12, 1898 in Kassel) was a German brewer , art collector and patron .

Life

Edward Habich, born near Kassel as a member of the owner family of the GE Habich's Söhne paint factory , initially worked as a wine merchant in Frankfurt am Main . He then went to Paris in 1840 and the USA in 1845 . He was commercially successful as a beer brewer in Boston .

After his return from the USA, Habich started building an art collection in Kassel around 1878. Edward Habich made 410 reproductions of the most important engravings by old masters available to the Kunstverein für Kurhessen for an exhibition in 1892 . He donated the Gothic painting Hercules and Antaeus to the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Kassel . His extensive collection of paintings was auctioned in 1892, his collection of drawings in 1899, and his decorative arts collection in 1901.
