Edward Michael Pakenham

Sir Edward "Ned" Michael Pakenham GCB (born March 19, 1778 in Pakenham Hall , Ireland , † January 8, 1815 near New Orleans ) was a British general of the Napoleonic era.

Edward Michael Pakenham was the second son of Edward Michael Pakenham, 2nd Baron Longford . His sister Kitty had been the wife of Arthur Wellesley , later the Duke of Wellington , since 1805 .

Ned became a lieutenant in the 92nd Foot on May 28, 1794, and three days later, due to the purchase of officers' licenses , a captain of the same regiment. On December 6 of the same year he was transferred to major of the 33rd Dragoons (Dragoons) and on January 1, 1798 to the 23rd Dragoons . He also quickly reached the following ranks. He was born on October 17, 1799 Lieutenant Colonel , on 25 October 1809 Colonel and on January 1, 1812 Major General .

He served in the Napoleonic Wars on the Iberian Peninsula , under his brother-in-law, in various usages. In the Battle of Salamanca he led Thomas Picton's third division ( "The fighting Division" ) and played a major role in the victorious outcome.

On September 11, 1813 he was knighted as Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath and on January 2, 1815 raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the same order.

After the death of General Ross , off Baltimore , he took command of the British troops in North America, where he fell in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 against the troops of the American general and later President Andrew Jackson .

A statue was erected in his honor and is now in St Paul's Cathedral in London.

Lieutenant General Sir Hercules Robert Pakenham GCB (1781-1850) was his brother.
