Location of Egels in Aurich

Egels is a district of the city of Aurich in East Frisia . It is located around 1.5 kilometers east of the Aurich city center and borders on a small section. Egels also includes the Osteregels development, which was first mentioned in 1613, northeast of the town center.

history

In a discovery site from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, burnt pieces of granite, knocking stones, pieces of flint, pieces of burnt flints, flint chips and a broken, surface-retouched arrowhead made of dentine came to light.

Egels is one of the so-called "Negen Loogen" (high German: nine villages) that were located around the Aurich town center, which was later developed. In addition to Egels, these are Extum, Haxtum, Walle, Rahe, Sandhorst, Wallinghausen, Popens and Kirchdorf. The places mentioned are mostly early medieval, sometimes high medieval settlements. Today's Aurich town center emerged from the 12th century in the middle of these villages around it. Egels was first mentioned in a document in 1431 as "Egelstum" in a document listing the parishes of the Auricherland . The medieval name has the meaning of "(residence of) the Egele clan" (nickname). In a map by Ubbo Emmius from 1599, the name in use today is used. Since July 1st 1972 Egels belongs to the city of Aurich.

politics

Egels has a seven-member local council together with the Wallinghausen district .

The local mayor is Hinrich Röben (SPD).

Economy and Infrastructure

In terms of traffic, Egels is mainly developed through Landesstraße 34 , which runs from the Aurich city center in an eastward direction to Friedeburg . Furthermore, the district road from the Aurich core city in the direction of Wallinghausen is of traffic importance. The Rücker dairy is located in Egels , the last remaining dairy in East Frisia.

The Egelser Wald belongs to the district boundaries. In the immediate vicinity is the Integrated Comprehensive School Waldschule Egels , which offers lessons up to the tenth grade. The Abitur can not be taken there, however, a change of school is necessary.
