Eggelingen is a district of the city of Wittmund in the Wittmund district of the same name in Lower Saxony .

geography

The village is located in the historic Harlingerland landscape , about twelve kilometers from the North Sea coast, away from the busy roads between the two district towns of Wittmund and Jever . The center of the village is surrounded by a number of farmers, such as B. Big and Small Warfen , Grehörn or Schluis.

history

The place name Eggelingen goes back to a Frisian personal name Agil / Egele. The historic town center was built on two terps , d. H. artificial hills in the marshland , their time of origin has not yet been researched. The historic church of the place dates from the 14th century. On July 1, 1972 Eggelingen was incorporated into the district town of Wittmund. In 2011 Eggelingen had 341 inhabitants.
