Lake Gunn, source of the western branch of the Eglinton River |
The Eglinton River is a river in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand . It rises on Lake Gunn , 25 km east of Milford Sound and flows south about 50 km through Fiordland National Park . It empties across the North Fjord on the east coast of Lake Te Anau .
For most of its course, the river is accompanied by the area's only major road, State Highway 94 , which leads from Te Anau to Milford Sound. The south end of the Milford Track is near the Eglinton River.
The river has formed a now isolated oxbow lake south of Knobs Flat , the Mirror Lakes .
