The Ehrenbreitstein is about 180  m above sea level. NHN high ridge in the area of both sides of the Rhine lying Koblenz , an independent city in Rheinland-Pfalz . It is located opposite the mouth of the Moselle at the Deutsches Eck ( 64.7  m ) in the Ehrenbreitstein district .

The elevation ends in a rugged rock spur towards the south-southwest into the Rhine Valley. The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (approx. 165 to 178  m ) is located on its south elevation, close to the summit . The Koblenz cable car has been connecting the Koblenz Rhine facilities with a point near the summit near the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress since 2010 .

The Ehrenbreitstein rises to the east of the mouth of the Mühlenbach in the Rhine near the Ehrenbreitstein district . It forms the southwest continuation of a hill ridge that gradually descends from Immendorf and Arenberg in the east via Niederberg , three other districts of Koblenz to Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein.

On the plateau-like summit region of the Ehrenbreitstein, north-northeast of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress , lies the fortress park , Haus Wester and a lookout point with a view of Koblenz at the mouth of the Moselle into the Rhine at the Deutsches Eck.

Natural allocation

The Ehrenbreitstein belongs to the natural space main unit group Middle Rhine area (No. 29), in the main unit Middle Rhine Basin (291) and in the subunit Neuwied basin edge (291.1) to the natural area Ehrenbreitsteiner Randterrasse (291.12). To the west, the landscape drops into the sub-unit Neuwied Rhine Valley Expansion (291.0).

Origin of name

Around the middle of the 10th century, the noble "Erembert", also called "Ehrenbrecht", from the Lahngau-Konradin dynasty, built a castle for himself and his sons Hermann and Erembert (junior) on the rock opposite the city of Koblenz initially "Hermannstein", soon also "Ehrenbrechtstein" and later "Ehrenbreitstein" was called. This castle also gave its name to the rock massif.

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

On the Ehrenbreitstein lies the Prussian fortress Ehrenbreitstein from the 19th century, which goes back to numerous previous fortifications . There is evidence that this strategically important plateau was already established in 1000  BC. Chr. Built a fortification. In the basement under the Great Traverse, where this 3000 year old fortification could be proven, the multimedia exhibition “A mountain in transition - 3000 years fortified place” was set up for the 2011 Federal Garden Show . The continuous fortification of a place over such a long period of time has so far not been proven anywhere else in Germany.

During the Second World War , tunnels in the mountain offered the population protection from air raids on Koblenz . In addition, archives from the Prussian state archives Koblenz and from the city ​​archives Koblenz were stored here.

Castle and Fort Helfenstein

On the southern spur of the Ehrenbreitstein, Helfenstein Castle ( 133  m ) was built around 1160 , and was inhabited by the von Helfenstein family until the 14th century and then fell into disrepair. With the construction of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, the castle ruins of Fort Helfenstein were built over.
