Eike von Savigny

Eike von Savigny (born February 10, 1941 in Berlin ) is a German philosopher and best known for his scientific work in the fields of philosophy and language , but also for legal publications.

Life

Eike von Savigny - a descendant of the 19th century legal scholar Friedrich Carl von Savigny - is one of seven children of the jurist Friedrich Carl von Savigny and his wife Amai. After graduating from high school in 1960, Savigny began to study law, philosophy, ancient history and older German studies at the University of Munich (now also at the University of Besançon). There von Savigny belonged to the inner circle of students around Wolfgang Stegmüller . He received his doctorate in 1965 with a dissertation on the subject of the empirical character of German criminal law (published in 1967), his habilitation in philosophy took place in 1970 at the University of Munich, based on his work, published in 1969, The philosophy of normal language . He was mainly inspired by the Ordinary Language Philosophy and here u. a. by Gilbert Ryle . Von Savigny received several guest professorships (1971/1972 in Trier: Logic and Philosophy of Science; 1975 in Salzburg: Philosophy and Linguistics). From 1970–1975 he was a member of the planning committee of the University of Munich, 1973–1979 a member of the Senate of the German Research Foundation , and 1975–1980 a member of the German Science Council . From 1981 to 1984 member of the Senate of Bielefeld University , where he was Dean of the Faculty of History and Philosophy at Bielefeld University from 1982 to 1983. In 1977 he was appointed to the chair for philosophy in Bielefeld and in the following years was decisive for the quality standard of the philosophy department there. In the academic year 1988/1989 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . Savigny was the elected expert reviewer of the German Research Foundation for Systematic Philosophy from 1992 to 2000 and chairman of the Committee for Systematic Philosophy from 1996 to 2000. In 2006 he retired.

Eike von Savigny has been married since 1965. The marriage has two children.

While questions of criminal law were initially the focus in Savigny's works, he soon turned, influenced by Wittgenstein's philosophy , to questions of linguistic logic and the philosophical background of linguistic statements , definitions and meanings . This means that it is part of the analytical philosophy founded by Wittgenstein . Most recently, he mainly wrote articles on Wittgenstein's late philosophy. He was extremely popular with students because of his captivating way of teaching and feared for his caustic comments. Savigny was particularly interested in good teaching and founded the virtual textbook network.
