Eileen Atkins

Dame Eileen June Atkins , DBE (born June 16, 1934 in London ) is a British actress and screenwriter .

Life

Eileen Atkins was born in East London to the then 46-year-old Annie Ellen and gas meter reader Arthur Thomas Atkins. Atkins attended Edmondon School and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama . Her mother was told by a fortune teller that her daughter had a brilliant career as a dancer ahead of her and so she was sent to various dance classes since she was a child.

Atkins had her first appearance on stage in the Open Air Theater in 1953. In 1962 she also appeared on the side of great actors such as Laurence Olivier in another play. Since then, she has appeared repeatedly in plays and has appeared in a ton of different plays, such as Cymbeline (1988), The Night of the Iguana (1992), John Gabriel Borkman (1996), and Honor (2003).

Soon afterwards she began to become active as a television actress and has appeared in countless series and other TV productions to this day. She was particularly often seen in literary adaptations such as A Midsummer Night's Dream (1971), Die Frau vom Meer (1974), Elektra (1974), Oliver Twist (1982), Titus Andronicus (1985), Madame Bovary (2000) and David Copperfield (2000).

As a film actress, she has appeared in Equus - Blind Horses (1977), Wolf (1994), Gosford Park (2001), Unterwegs nach Cold Mountain (2003), Vanity Fair - Vanity Fair (2004) and Ask the Dust (2006) to see.

In 2007 she starred in the BBC series Cranford with u. a. Michael Gambon and Judi Dench one of the leading roles. This achievement earned her a BAFTA and an Emmy Award .

In 1990 she was inducted into the Order of the British Empire as Commander . In 2001 she was ennobled as Dame Commander of this order and has since had the addition of Lady . In 2010 she starred in the black comedy flick Wild Target with Bill Nighy , Emily Blunt and Rupert Grint . In the same year she also took on the role of Eleanor of Aquitaine in Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, representing Vanessa Redgrave .

Together with actress Jean Marsh , she developed the globally successful television series Das Haus am Eaton Place for ITV in the early 1970s . In 2010 a Christmas three-part series was filmed as a sequel for the BBC . Atkins also took on the role of Lady Maud Holland.

In 2018 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Personal

Atkins was married to actor Julian Glover since 1957 ; the marriage was divorced in 1966. In 1978 she married her second husband, Bill Shepherd.
