A house of cards (original title: House of Cards ) is a British mini-series that was broadcast by the BBC in 1990 and is mainly attributed to the genres of political thriller and drama . It is about the fictional story of a power-hungry politician who, contrary to earlier promises, is passed over by the prime minister in the appointment of the cabinet and then works out a plan of revenge together with his wife.
The series was created as an expanded adaptation of the novel of the same name by Michael Dobbs , who was once chief of staff on the side of the Conservative Party .
A house of cards is the first in a trilogy of miniseries. In 1993 followed the second part To Head and Crown (English To Play the King ), in 1995 the last part of Chess the King (English The Final Cut ). Each part of the trilogy consists of four episodes.
Since 2013, the series and the novel of the same name have served as the basis for the successful US adaptation House of Cards with Kevin Spacey in the lead role.
action
The series takes place in the British capital, London . At the center is Francis Urquhart, an intelligent, experienced and power-conscious politician of the Conservative Party . As Chief Whip , it is his job to bring the members of his parliamentary group in the lower house on the party line or government line.
When the coveted and already promised cabinet post is withheld from him by the new Prime Minister and party friend Henry Collingridge, Urquhart seeks revenge. He increases his political influence through intrigue and unscrupulous actions, supported by his wife Elizabeth. Francis now uses his intimate knowledge of politics in London and exploits, among others, the ambitious reporter Mattie Storin for his goals.
