The monochrome star reaches a body length of 19 to 22 centimeters and is very similar to the star , but in its magnificent dress it is completely unspotted black and has a uniform, purple sheen that shimmers green from certain angles. Adult females and males in the first summer sometimes have light spots on the under tail-coverts. Females in a plain dress and in the first winter have light spots on their back, stomach and under tail-coverts, the parting is mostly unspotted, but always spotted in the star. The beak of the males in the magnificent dress is light yellow, the legs pink. In the plain dress, the beak and legs are dark.
voice
The vocalizations of the monochrome star are very similar to those of the star, but often sound clearer and sharper, louder and drawn upwards. The trills are usually stronger and sound more rolling.
