A single cable gondola ( EUB ) is a designation for cable cars that have only one endless rope that is spliced into a loop and that also serves as a carrying and pulling rope. Gondola lifts and material ropeways can be monocable ropeways, chair lifts and drag lifts are always monocable ropeways , either fixed-grip or detachable ropeways. In the case of the fixed clamps , the armchair or the pulling bow is firmly connected to the rope, which must therefore circulate slowly in order to enable entry and exit.

The term monocable gondola now often refers to a modern design of a gondola lift , in which the gondolas for boarding and disembarking passengers in the stations are uncoupled from the circulating rope, slowly guided over a hanging rail and accelerated again in the other direction and coupled onto the rope, which is achieved by automatically operated rope clamps such as the Müller clamp . This makes it possible to achieve high transport performance, as the rope can revolve much faster than with a fixed-clamp track.

The suspension rope also serves as a pull rope and is referred to as a hoisting rope . This is driven by an electric motor. A special device is used to accelerate and brake the individual gondolas (which can hold two to ten people) in the stations. Due to the stress of this rope (tight bending radii in the region of the deflection pulleys) such as ropes have equal lay ropes are formed. Its area moment of inertia is smaller than that of a counter-lay rope . For this reason, single-cable circulating ropeways require less spacing between supports than ropes in which the supporting and traction ropes are separated ( two- cable circulating ropeway ).
