Population development in Dessau-Roßlau
In the late Middle Ages and early modern times , only a few thousand people lived in Dessau, and only a few hundred in Roßlau . The population grew slowly and fell again and again due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. With the onset of industrialization in the 19th century, population growth accelerated. In 1830 only 10,000 people lived in Dessau, by 1900 there were already 50,000. The population in Roßlau increased tenfold between 1807 (1074 inhabitants) and 1900 (10,059 inhabitants). On October 1, 1923, several surrounding communities were incorporated into Dessau. The population grew to over 70,000.
With the incorporation of Roßlau on April 1, 1935, the population of the city of Dessau exceeded the limit of 100,000, making it a major city . In 1940 the population reached its historic high of 131,400. Due to the severe destruction in World War II and the spin-off of Roßlau on April 1, 1945, the population of Dessau fell again below the limit of 100,000 and was 85,663 in December 1945. In Roßlau the population reached its historical high of 17,473 in 1946.
In 1972 Dessau's population again exceeded the 100,000 mark. Since the political change in the GDR , the population has fallen by a quarter, so that the city is now far from the city limits. Due to the migration to the southwest and demographic aging, the number of inhabitants fell to less than 80,000 by 2006. On December 31, 2006, the “ official population number ” according to an update by the Saxony-Anhalt State Statistical Office was 77,394 for Dessau and 13,849 for Roßlau (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices).
On July 1, 2007, the cities of Dessau and Roßlau merged to form the new city of Dessau-Roßlau with 91,243 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2006). At the end of 2008 the city had 88,693 inhabitants. In order to counteract the trend of emigration and demographic aging, incorporations are being prepared. Lt. Forecast by the Bertelsmann Foundation from 2011, however, a further population decline of 22% to 68,380 inhabitants is to be expected by 2030.
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1830 these are estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates of the city administration (until 1944), the state central administration for statistics (1945 to 1989) and the state statistical office (from 1990). From 1871, the information relates to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1966 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.
