Population development of Freiburg im Breisgau
This article shows the population development of Freiburg im Breisgau in tabular and graphical form.
Population development
In the late Middle Ages and early modern times lived in Freiburg between 5,000 and 10,000 people. Freiburg was the largest city between Basel and Strasbourg. The population grew very slowly and kept falling due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. Only with the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century did population growth accelerate. In 1800 the city had around 9,000 inhabitants, in 1900 there were already 62,000. In 1934, the city's population exceeded 100,000, making it a major city . In the census of May 17, 1939, 110,110 inhabitants were counted.
During World War II , the city was the target of Allied air raids. On the evening of November 27, 1944, the British Royal Air Force bombed Freiburg as part of Operation Tigerfish , killing around 3,000 people and destroying large parts of the city center. When the French army occupied Freiburg on April 21, 1945, 60,000 people were still living in the city. As early as 1947, the return of forced evacuated persons and the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the German eastern regions caused the population to exceed 100,000 again.
In 1963 there were already 150,000 people living in the city. In 1996 the limit of 200,000 inhabitants was exceeded. On December 31, 2010, the “ official population ” of Freiburg was 224,191 (only main residences ) according to an update by the Baden-Württemberg State Statistical Office . With a population growth of 28 percent in the period from 1980 to 2010, the city grew the fastest of the major cities in Baden-Württemberg. With an average age of 40.3 years, Freiburg is the city with the youngest population in the state.
In the case of Freiburg, however, the official data from the State Statistical Office now deviate considerably from the likewise official data from the City Registration Office . Its value of 203,240 inhabitants as of January 1, 2010 was over 18,000 inhabitants or almost 10 percent lower than the figure updated by the state authority. For each resident registered with the State Statistical Office, the city currently receives 750 euros per year as a funding allocation from the state. According to the population census with the reference date May 9, 2011, the residents 'registration office expected a population that would be significantly closer to that of the residents' registration office, possibly even below 200,000. The number determined there and published on May 31, 2013 of 209,628 inhabitants was higher than expected. Once the number has been adopted by the State Office, the state's funding will be gradually adjusted to the amount resulting from the new figures by 2016 [obsolete] . The number of 209,628 inhabitants published on May 31, 2013 means that the city will then receive 15 million euros less annually from the state. This is 2.5 million euros less income than the city treasury had taken into account in its planning.
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1821 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the city administration (until 1970) and the State Statistical Office (from 1971). From 1834 the information relates to the “customs clearance population”, from 1871 to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the place of the main residence”. Before 1834, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey methods.

Population forecast
The Bertelsmann Foundation's “Wegweiser Kommune” internet platform provides data on the development of the population of 2,959 municipalities in Germany. It predicts (as of January 2018) an increase in the population for Freiburg between 2009 and 2030 by 11.9 percent.
The population forecast of the Bertelsmann Foundation is based on the data from the State Statistical Office, not from the municipal registration office. The urban population forecast by the residents' registration office from 2012 assumes an increase of 7.3% from 2012. Including the urban population from 2009, this results in a forecast increase of 8.1% (17,195 people) by the year 2030.
It should be noted, however, that the forecast figures for 2015 are approx. 230,000 inhabitants or approx. 220,000 inhabitants with approx. 20,000 or approx. 10,000 is above the official number of almost 210,000 inhabitants mentioned in 2013. These are probably effects of the CENSUS 2011.

In 2006 published “Guide to Demographic Change 2020”, a population increase of 7.2 percent (15,384 people) was predicted for Freiburg between 2003 and 2020 (main residences).
