The effects of the Second World War are clearly visible . Large parts of the city were destroyed by the Allied air raids. The population fell from 151,760 in May 1939 by 28.2 percent to 108,894 in May 1945. After the end of the war, the population of the city rose to more than 200,000 by 1964 due to the return of the forced evacuees and the influx of numerous refugees and expellees from the German eastern regions People.
