Population development
In the Middle Ages and the early modern period in Krefeld only a few hundred people lived. The population grew very slowly and kept falling due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. Only with the beginning of industrialization in the 19th century did population growth accelerate. While Krefeld only had 8,363 inhabitants in 1804, the city's population exceeded the limit of 100,000 in 1888, making it a major city .
In the census of December 5, 1917, a total local population of 120,225 people was determined. According to the economics department of the War Food Office, these included 7,502 military personnel and 1,514 prisoners of war. On August 1, 1929, it merged with the city of Uerdingen (11,867 inhabitants 1925). In the census of May 17, 1939, 170,968 people were identified. Until April 24, 1940 the city was called Krefeld-Uerdingen am Rhein .
During the Second World War , large parts of the east of the city were hit in a British air raid on June 21, 1943, the inner city was significantly destroyed by a firestorm caused by incendiary bombs . At the end of the war, 73.7 percent of all apartments were destroyed or damaged, 33.9 percent were classified as total losses. When the American army took Krefeld on March 3, 1945, 116,500 people were still living in the city. This corresponds to a decrease of 31.9 percent since May 1939.
Because of the return of the forced evacuees and the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the German eastern areas , the population rose rapidly. In the whole of 1945, 22,092 people, including 4,236 refugees, moved to Krefeld. In 1946 there were 11,815 newcomers, including 2,630 refugees. In 1951, as many people lived in the city as before the war. In 1994 the population reached its historic high of 249,662. In 2008 the city with 236,333 inhabitants ranked 31st among the major German cities and 14th within North Rhine-Westphalia.
