Population development in Moers
This article shows the population development of Moers in tabular and graphical form.
Population development
The population of Moers rose only slowly in the Middle Ages and the early modern period . Due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famines, it kept falling. In 1900 around 6,000 people lived in the city and a further 6,000 in the rural mayor's office. The subsequent rapid increase in the number of residents is determined by the merger with the rural mayor's office and the growth in mining.
In 1920 Moers had 25,000 inhabitants, by 1965 this number had doubled to 50,000. With the incorporation of the towns of Rheinkamp (40,924 inhabitants 1974) and Kapellen (6,267 inhabitants 1974) on January 1, 1975, the population of Moers exceeded the limit of 100,000, making it a major city .
In 2002 the population reached its historic high of 108,019. According to the State Office for Data Processing and Statistics of North Rhine-Westphalia , the “ official population ” for Moers was 105,102 on December 31, 2011 (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices ). However, the 2011 census showed only 104,009 inhabitants for May 9, 2011 and, after updating to December 31, 2011, the number was 103,831.
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Until 1832 it is mostly an estimate, then census results (¹) or official updates by the State Statistical Office. From 1871, the information relates to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the location of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.
