Population development of Siegen. Above from 1455 to 2017. Below an excerpt from 1871. The short red graph in the diagram below shows the population development of Alt-Siegen

As early as 1455, an estimated 2,500 people were living in Siegen. At the 1867 census, the official population was over 10,000 for the first time. In 1897 the city already had almost 20,000 inhabitants, by 1939 this number doubled again to around 40,000. Due to the gradual incorporation of the towns of Buschgotthardshütten and Achenbach in 1902, 1912, 1934 and 1937, the population grew only marginally.

In World War II victories (12,000 people) lost about 30% of the population. The population sank to 28,000 by 1945 and reached the pre-war level again in 1952. In 1960 it had risen to 48,000 people, including 8,600 displaced persons.

Between 1966 and 1969, the population of Siegen grew by almost 8,000 people on July 1, 1966 and Feuersbach on January 1, 1969 due to the incorporation of the towns of Trupbach , Seelbach , Breitenbach , Bürbach , Kaan-Marienborn and Volnsberg . On January 1, 1975, the population had an all-time high of 117,224 inhabitants due to the incorporation of the cities of Hüttental (38,867 inhabitants in 1974) and Eiserfeld (22,354 inhabitants in 1974) in the course of the local reorganization . Since 1975 the population has decreased by around ten percent to just under 106,000 people in 1987, before rising again to around 112,000 people by 1993 and then falling again. With the 2011 census, the official population fell below the limit of 100,000, but has increased slightly since then and in 2014 again exceeded 100,000.

The Siegen-Mitte district has 38,962 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2015).

The following sections show the number of inhabitants by area. Up to 1833 these are mostly estimates, then census results (*) or official updates from the respective statistical offices or city administration. From 1843 the information relates to the local population , from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the population at the place of the main residence .
