The EFZ association was founded in 1973 in Balingen by some railroad friends, most of whom already knew each other and were now aiming for a closer union. Lectures and presentations dealt with railway history and operation. The association was named after the Zollern Railway , where the founding place of Balingen is located.

On April 6, 1973, the EFZ organized the first trip with one of the German Federal Railroad leased locomotive of the Prussian P 8 (Series 38) together with the car.

On December 31, 1974 the last Prussian steam locomotive series of the Federal Railroad, the Prussian T 18 (class 78.0-5) and 38 (P8), took off. The Tagesschau reported on the event. In 1975 the first own car, an express train car converted into a company car , and the first club locomotive, the 64 289, came to the EFZ.

From 1977 onwards, due to the " steam locomotive ban " , the special trips no longer took place on the tracks of the Federal Railroad, but on private railways (above all Hohenzollerische Landesbahn (HzL) and Württembergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (WEG)). In 1982 the EFZ started regular museum operations on the HzL route from Kleinengstingen to Gammertingen and in 1984 also between Hechingen and Eyach .

Since 1993, the EFZ locomotives have been allowed to run on federal railway lines again. Since then, there have been trips throughout southwest Germany and beyond. The so-called “Three Kings Program” has been a tradition since 1978 on January 6th. Also made some international and long distance trips with steam engines, so 1993 and 1995 to Vienna , in 1995 by Austria , Italy and Slovenia to Ljubljana (slow. Ljubljana) , 1996 to Dresden and on to Berlin , 2007 and 2012 to Nordhausen and also 2012 after Luzna u Rakovnika in the Czech Republic . In 1996, the club's wagons covered 197,000 km, and locomotive 01 519 at the end of the 1990s covered over 20,000 km annually.

The EFZ location was relocated from the Tübingen depot to Rottweil at the beginning of 2007 .

"Zollernbahn-Echo" magazine

The EFZ initially published the Zollernbahn-Echo magazine. It contained articles on railway history and operations, as well as news about vehicle relocations. For four years, the magazine was a source of information beyond membership. In addition, the EFZ published special issues of the journal. The first special number 038 382 - 038 711 - 038 772 was produced using the transfer printing process and sold for 50 pfennigs on the first special trip. For the 40th anniversary in 2013, four issues of her magazine will appear again, this time under the name Der Zollernbahner .
