The Eisenwerke Kaiserslautern (EWK) were an industrial company in Kaiserslautern that no longer existed in this form today and was mainly active in iron and steel construction.

In 2002 the company split up. The environmental technology division was transferred to EWK Umwelttechnik GmbH , the armaments business was taken over by the US armaments company General Dynamics and initially incorporated within the corporate structure of the subsidiary Santa Bárbara Sistemas . This branch operates today under the name of General Dynamics European Land Systems-Germany GmbH .

history

The EWK was founded in September 1864 on the initiative of the industrialists Carl Friedrich Euler , head of Gienanth 's iron works in Trippstadt and Hochstein, and Franz Flamin Meuth . As early as 1877, the company was recognized for its commercial achievements. Until the middle of the 20th century, the focus was on iron and steel structures for the construction industry, bridge and road construction, as well as cast furnaces and heating systems. After the Second World War , the company specialized in the production of mobile military bridges. In 1964, when the Zschocke works were taken over, the environmental technology division was added.

Location

The traditional location of the company is Barbarossastraße near the Kaiserslautern Central Station, on the Kaiserslautern-Neustadt railway line. The headquarters of the two companies are still located here today.

General Dynamics European Land Systems-Germany GmbH manufactures various types of mobile military bridges, such as the Amphibian M3 (an amphibious bridge and ferry vehicle used by the armed forces of Germany, Great Britain, Taiwan and Singapore), the folding floating bridge 2, and the infantry bridge IAB and the REBS rapid folding bridge.

In 2009 the German Armed Forces ordered 200 copies of the Eagle IV special vehicle worth 100 million euros. The pre-assembly takes place in Switzerland, the final assembly in Kaiserslautern. 70 cars were to be delivered to Afghanistan in 2009.

In addition to the main plant in Kaiserslautern, there is another plant on the site of the former US Airbase Sembach .

EWK Umwelttechnik GmbH

EWK Umwelttechnik GmbH's main activities are exhaust air, exhaust gas and process gas cleaning systems as well as water treatment systems. Today's headquarters are in Kantstrasse in Kaiserslautern.
