Elizabeth May (politician)
Elizabeth May (born June 9, 1954 in Hartford , Connecticut ) is a Canadian environmental activist, author , politician and lawyer . She is a member of the Canadian House of Commons and was party leader of the Canadian Green Party from 2006 to 2019 .
biography
May was born in the USA. Her American mother was an anti-nuclear activist and a co-founder of the SANE peace organization . Her British father was the Vice President of Aetna Life and Casualty . May attended Miss Porter's School in Farmington , Connecticut. In 1972 her family moved to Margaree Harbor , Nova Scotia . After finishing school, she attended university and graduated from Dalhousie Law School in 1983 . During this time she campaigned against the Swedish company Stora Enso , which used 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid as herbicides . In 1989 she was elected to the board of directors of the Sierra Club of Canada .
In 2001, she went on a 17-day hunger strike to protest the failure of the Canadian government in the case of the Sydney Tar Ponds in Cape Breton . In August 2006, May was elected to succeed Jim Harris as chairwoman of the party. In the 2011 general election , she won in her constituency Saanich — Gulf Islands on Vancouver Island , making her the first elected Green MP in the Canadian lower house. She was able to defend this seat in the general election in 2015 and 2019 . On November 4, 2019, she resigned as party leader of the Greens after 13 years in office. Jo-Ann Roberts followed her interim .
