Elke Fröhlich

Elke Fröhlich (born January 30, 1944 in Ottmachau , Silesia ) is a German historian . She is the editor of the 32-volume edition of all of Joseph Goebbels' diaries .

Life

Cheerful studied history , political science and German studies at the University of Munich , where he was in 1983 by Karl Bosl with a thesis on "individual cases resistance" doctorate . She is the widow of the historian Martin Broszat, who died in 1989 .

She worked at the Institute for Contemporary History for almost four decades . She worked u. a. as managing director of the project on resistance and persecution in Bavaria located there and was co-editor of five volumes and author of a volume in the series "Bavaria in the Nazi era", which emerged from this "pioneering project of a story 'from below'" (Michael Wildt) . She headed the major project on Joseph Goebbels' diaries and is the sole editor of the entire edition, which was completed in 2008 with three indexed volumes. All diary entries are published in full in 29 text volumes, a total of around 98% of the material actually written by Goebbels (around 6,700 pages) and dictated (around 35,000 pages). The edition of Goebbels' diaries is considered to be the "first-rate source on the history of the Nazi movement and the 'Third Reich' because no other top representative has recorded the rise and fall of the NSDAP and the Nazi regime with such energy and consistency over the past twenty years" (Yearbook Extremism & Democracy).

As a scientific expert, Fröhlich contributed to numerous TV documentaries about the Nazi era, including a. for ZDF-History , “Hitler's Helpers” and for the three-part ARD documentary “Joseph Goebbels”, which received the Bavarian TV Prize in 2005 .
