Elke Kappen (born on May 21, 1963 in Kamen ) is a German graduate social worker and local politician .

Life

After graduating from the municipal high school in Kamen, Kappen studied social work at the Hagen University of Applied Sciences . She worked for 30 years in the neighboring town of Werne , among other things as a department head for youth, family, education, culture and sport. From 2016 to 2018 she was 1st alderman and general representative of the mayor of the city of Kamen.

On March 8, 2018, Elke Kappen was nominated as mayor candidate by the Kamen SPD with 50 of 51 votes. There was no clear winner in the mayoral election on June 17, 2018. Kappen won the runoff election on July 1, 2018 with 54.3 percent, while her competitor Tanja Brückel (non-party) received 45.7 percent of the vote. The turnout of 33 percent was below the turnout of the previous election.

Elke Kappen took office as mayor on August 1, 2018. Kappen's term ends in 2025, as her predecessor, Herman Hupe, left office before the end of his term .
