Ella Maillart (born February 20, 1903 in Geneva , † March 27, 1997 in Chandolin , Switzerland ) was a Swiss athlete, travel writer and photographer.

Life

As the daughter of Paul Maillart, a wealthy Geneva fur trader, and Dagmar Klim, her mother of Danish descent, “Kini” Maillart inherited their enthusiasm for sport, especially sailing and skiing, in their early youth. In 1922 she founded the first country hockey club for women in western Switzerland and sailed to Corsica with her childhood friend Hermine de Saussure . Further boat trips through the Mediterranean followed. In 1924 she represented Switzerland at the Summer Olympics in Paris in single-handed sailing. As a skier, she was a member of the Swiss national team and coached the Swiss women's land hockey team.

From 1930 to 1932 she traveled to Moscow , the Caucasus and the Soviet republics of Central Asia. She wrote newspaper articles and her first books about it. In 1934 she traveled to Manchuria on behalf of the Parisian newspaper Le Petit Parisien and then went on a trip with the Times reporter Peter Fleming through the most remote areas of China with the goal of Kashmir. After another trip through India, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey (1937), the journey from Geneva to Kabul followed in 1939 with Annemarie Schwarzenbach and her Ford. When the Second World War broke out, this company ended prematurely in Afghanistan. Ella Maillart spent the war years in southern India with spiritual contemplation under the guidance of various Hindu masters.

After returning to Europe in 1945, Ella Maillart settled in Geneva and Chandolin, a village in the Valais Alps. Again and again she interrupted her literary work to return to India and to accompany small groups of tourists to Asian countries as a tour guide.

Ella Maillart's written estate is entrusted to the Bibliothèque de Genève , her photographic work from the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne. Her documentaries are in the collection of the Cinémathèque Suisse in Lausanne. A permanent exhibition is dedicated to Ella Maillart in Chandolin. In Karakol, Kyrgyzstan there is a permanent exhibition of her photographs in the local museum.
