Ellen M. Kuras (born July 10, 1959 in New Jersey , United States) is an American camerawoman and documentary filmmaker .

Life

Ellen M. Kuras grew up in a suburb of New Jersey . She originally wanted to study Egyptology at Brown University , but decided to study social anthropology . Her interest changed, however, when she took courses in photography at the nearby Rhode Island School of Design . She therefore studied film theory for a year at the University of Paris in 1979 and then went back to Brown, where she graduated with a double degree in semiotics and anthropology. She then worked at a museum in Providence and decided to hone her camera skills, which is why she attended the Visual Studies workshop in Rochester . Then she took any film job she could get regardless of pay. She worked on documentaries as a production assistant, sound editor and camera assistant.

With the documentary Samsara: Death and Rebirth in Cambodia , which was the first American production to shoot in Cambodia in 1987 and show the effects of the civil war, Kuras made his debut as a self-employed camerawoman when it was published in 1990. In 1992 she made her debut as a feature film camerawoman with the film drama Swoon , a biopic about Leopold and Loeb . For this she received a nomination for Best Camera at the Independent Spirit Awards in 1993 . Kuras also made her debut as a director in 2008 with the documentary The Betrayal - Nerakhoon . She began shooting the documentary in 1984, which tells the story of a family who fled Laos to the USA. In 2009 she received an Oscar nomination for best documentary, her biggest award to date.

In 2013 she was appointed to the competition jury of the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival .
