Elly Hoyt

Elly Hoyt (born 1987 in Tasmania ) is an Australian jazz singer .

Life

Hoyt grew up in the northwest of Tasmania and - influenced by her father's jazz records - decided to sing jazz at the age of thirteen. She then performed with the Tattersall's Youth Big Band ; performances with Don Burrows and James Morrison followed . At the age of fourteen she was the youngest vocalist to date to sing the national anthem at the cricket tournament between Australia and New Zealand. In 2006 she moved to Brisbane to study , where she studied jazz singing at the Queensland Conservatory of Griffith University . The following year she was a finalist in the ABC 612 Jazz Singers Competition . She received the Generation in Jazz Scholarship from James Morrison in 2008 . This was followed by appearances at festivals such as the Melbourne Women's International Jazz Festival ; In 2010 she performed in the Australian pavilion at Expo Shanghai . At the end of 2010 she released her debut album, which won the Bell Award for the best Australian jazz vocal album of the year.
