Elmar Schenkel
Elmar Schenkel (born August 28, 1953 in Hovestadt near Soest / Westphalia ) is an English scholar , writer and translator living in Leipzig . He grew up in Oestinghausen .
Life
After studying art history , sinology and philosophy in Marburg and studying English , Romance languages , German and Japanese studies in Freiburg im Breisgau , he received his doctorate in 1983 on John Cowper Powys and completed his habilitation in 1992.
He has published works on John Cowper Powys, Hugo Kükelhaus , HG Wells , modern poetry , travel literature, fantasy and the relationship between literature and science, and has translated British poetry.
As a writer, he is best known for his literary essayistic writings and travelogues. In 1991 he received the Hermann-Hesse-Förderpreis. He was editor of the magazines Nachtcafé (1980–86), Flugasche (1986–93) and Chelsea Hotel (1991–98).
From 1993 until his retirement in 2019 he was professor of English literature at the University of Leipzig and has been writing for the cultural dialogue magazine Liaisons since 2008 . Since 2019 he has been chairman of the working group for comparative mythology .
In addition to his activities in the literary field, he is also active as an artist and has captured his impressions, most of which he made while traveling, on acrylic paintings .

- 2011 Katzendorf village clerk award in Transylvania for his alert transmission of the written word - Elmar Schenkel was the village clerk there for some time
