Elsbeth Wolffheim

Elsbeth Wolffheim (born April 26, 1934 in Stettin as Elsbeth Dittmann ; † April 25, 2002 in Darmstadt ) was a German literary historian, Slavist , translator and author .

life and work

Elsbeth Dittmann studied German and Slavic studies . Her academic teachers included the founder of the Hamburg office for German exile literature , Hans Wolffheim (1904–1973), whom she later married. After completing her studies, she worked as a translator, literary critic and author of monographs and studies. In addition, she worked as a literary historian on German exile literature ; and as a Slavist, especially with Russian literature . At the time of glasnost she was one of the first to invite Russian authors to Germany.

Elsbeth Wolffheim was a founding member of the Hamburg House of Literature and was on its board for twelve years. She was a member of the German writers' association PEN-Zentrum Deutschland (PEN), where she held the office of deputy president from the mid-1990s until her death. Among other things, she campaigned for persecuted writers and artists and was responsible for the aid program “Writers in Exile” at PEN.

The city of Darmstadt , where the PEN is based, set up a literary grant for persecuted authors from 2002 and named it in honor of the deceased Elsbeth-Wolffheim literary grant . The scholarship is awarded by the City of Darmstadt together with the PEN for one year each; The first scholarship holder was the Cuban writer Elvira Rodriguez Puerto in 2004 .
