Parents course

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A parenting course is an educational offer for parents with the aim of strengthening parenting skills. Parent courses have different approaches and scientific backgrounds. The target audience varies between parents of young children and parents of teenagers and parents with or without specific problems. The aim is to optimize the parenting style of parents (Hurrlmann and Unverzagt, 2000).

Some parenting courses are associated with a parenting driver's license . However, this term does not designate a uniform qualification. Nor is it an obligation, even if the term “ driver's license ” suggests the opposite.

Promotion of parenting courses in Germany

In Germany in 2000, with the law to outlaw violence in upbringing, nonviolent upbringing was anchored in the Civil Code (Section 1631, Paragraph 2 BGB); At the same time, the youth welfare organizations were asked to show parents ways in which conflict situations in the family could be resolved without violence, and financial support was granted for corresponding offers. Individual federal states have also developed their own parenting course programs. There are also offers for certain family situations, for example for families with a migration background and for single parents .

In Herford , the Chancereich initiative, a private foundation, sponsors those parents who have attended a free education course as well as all of the medical check-ups at the pediatrician and who have registered their child in the day-care center before their third birthday with a cash bonus.

Promotion of parent education in Austria

The “Guidelines for the Promotion of Parent Education”, which came into force in 2005, serve the purpose of promoting non-violent upbringing by guaranteeing high-quality parenting education offers, preventing difficulties in the everyday parent-child relationship and partnership, and in doing so, targeting mothers and fathers of all levels of education to reach. Based on these guidelines, non-profit organizations can receive financial support for parenting education.

On special topics, offers for a special group of people, such as grandparents or step- parents, or education for parents of disabled children or parents with an intercultural background can be funded. There is no legal entitlement to funding.

Orientation of individual parent courses

Some of the more popular parenting courses are:

In contrast to this, the educational program for baby reflection time is aimed at young people from the age of 14. It gives them the opportunity, as part of a "parenting internship" with the help of a baby simulation doll, to experience in a safe environment what it can actually mean to be responsible for an infant 24 hours a day. In Germany the program is u. a. mediated by Pro Familia .

Step - Systematic Training for Effective Parenting

The program was developed and published by psychologists Don Dinkmeyer Sr., Gary D. McKay and Don Dinkmeyer Jr. The publication was supplemented by a detailed concept for training and dissemination. It is based on Alfred Adler's individual psychology and the work of the psychologists Rudolf Dreikurs and Thomas Gordon . On the basis of the exchange in the group, empirical exercises, power point presentations, videos and role-plays, students learn how to recognize and deal with misconduct, encouragement and good communication. It works with natural and logical consequences. After each evening of 2 hours, the parents practice what they have learned at home and carry the experiences into the group over the next week. This course lasts 10 weeks and promotes a democratic style of upbringing.

Strong parents - strong children

This parenting course program of the German Child Protection Association is based on humanistic psychology , systemic family therapy and communication theories.

The target group of the courses are all parents. A focus on special target groups such as single parents, blended families or educationally disadvantaged parents is possible and desirable. Courses are also offered for parents of children of certain ages (0–3, school children or children in puberty). In special courses, educational professionals such as educators, socio-educational family helpers or teachers can learn the concept of instructive education.

The course program is based on the model of instructional upbringing, which is intended to strengthen parents in their parenting skills. By (re) attaining parental presence, parents should be able to reduce dirigistic and negativistic parenting behavior and find a more positive and relaxed view of their children again. In the course of the course, the parents can try out the parents as a weekly task and thus also involve their partner.

The participants are instructed to become clear about their personal educational goals and values, to regain their own self-confidence and to strengthen childish self- confidence and to improve their communication with the child. Information on child developmental psychology enables parents to take a more relaxed look at child problems and should enable parents to accompany children in their exploration and problem-solving behavior and, if necessary, to support them.

With the creation of the accompanying material for the promotion of mental health (2011), the previously missing theoretical foundation was added and a bonding model for the instructional education was added. The perspective of instructive education on the needs of children is explained using examples from neurosciences and developmental psychology. The Federal Ministry of Health provides the material for download free of charge.

Educate kess

Alfred Adler's individual psychology and its application by Rudolf Dreikurs also form the scientific basis for Kess-educate . "Kits" is the abbreviation for k ooperativ, e rmutigend, s ozial and s ituationsorientiert.

The aim of the course is to promote a cooperative, democratic style of upbringing ; to this end, common rules for family life are drawn up and decisions are made by everyone in a family council. The course promotes the ability of the participants to understand the basic social needs of a child, the disregard of which leads to undesirable behavior. Adults and children are considered equal and mutual recognition of needs is emphasized. The parents or educators learn to develop cooperation , conflict management and to convey boundaries to the children through logical consequences. Consistent, encouraging action should promote independence and allow children to take on as much responsibility for themselves as possible.

The participants are instructed to act in a situation-oriented manner, to offer children options and to observe positive behavior instead of reacting primarily to negative behavior. This promotes self-esteem and responsible behavior based on partnership. Periods with a special quality of care, in which parents pay undivided attention to their children and actively listen, are called gemstone moments. Gemstone moments should convey special appreciation to the children.

The course consists of five units:

  1. See the child - pay attention to basic social needs
  2. Understand behaviors - react appropriately
  3. Encourage children - accept the consequences of one's own actions
  4. Defuse conflicts - solve problems
  5. Promote independence - develop cooperation

Safe - Safe education for parents

The program Safe - Safe Education for Parents serves the purpose of parent education and prevention. It is aimed at parents-to-be and is based on the knowledge that parents often pass on their own attachment experiences to the generation of their children and that especially the early phases of the parent-child relationship are decisive for the children's ability to bond.

The program begins around the 20th week of pregnancy and lasts until the child is 1 year old. It aims to develop a secure bond between parent and child. Parents are strengthened in their ability to respond sensitively to the expressions and needs of the child. Young parents are empowered to be able to shape their relationship with their child positively from the start. In a series of ten all-day group meetings before and after the birth, led by two mentors, parents learn and practice dealing with their child. In addition, personal attachment experiences are discussed in supplementary one-on-one interviews and, if necessary, the first steps to come to terms with personal trauma are taken. The adult attachment interview , further questionnaires and video feedback are used. A telephone hotline is available to parents as additional support .

The Safe program was developed by Karl Heinz Brisch and implemented in cooperation with the Bavarian State Ministry for Labor and Social Affairs, Family and Women and the State Institute for Early Education .

effectiveness

In Family Monitor 2006 of the BMFSFJ is highlighted, it is estimated that around one third of fathers and mothers with their children's education overwhelmed were. Families with educational difficulties would hardly be reached by offers of parenting and family education. This gap can be bridged through close cooperation ( educational partnerships ) between parents and educational institutions, especially day-care centers .

The same report pointed out that up to now were only very limited studies on the effectiveness of parent education in general that, however well evaluation studies are made on specific parental courses about to Strong parents - Strong children to effect and Triple P . It can be stated that, for example, the Effect program is particularly effective if it is used as a combination of parent and child programs.
