Elyros

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elyros ( Elyrus ; Ἔλυρος) was an ancient Greek city in Crete . It was the most important ancient city in the southwest of the island. The city was inland near the present-day village of Rodovani and had two ports, Syia and Lisos .

The city has not yet been the target of excavations, so little is known about its history. Elyros seems to have flourished especially in Classical times. In the third century BC Elryos was enemies with Kydonia . Elyros may have been a member of the West Cretan Oreioi. 183 BC The city was one of several that signed a treaty with Eumenes II . It is also known that the inhabitants sent a gift to the oracle of Delphi . Ruins of an aqueduct , the city wall and a theater have been observed during inspections. In late antiquity, a Christian basilica was built, which was decorated with mosaics. The city minted its own coins. After the Suda , Thaletas was born here. In the 9th century, the residents gave up the settlement.
