Emil Thoma (politician)
Emil Thoma (born May 29, 1854 in Krensheim near Grünsfeld ; † May 22, 1932 ) was a Lord Mayor of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau .
Life
Thoma attended grammar school in Tauberbischofsheim and later moved to Freiburg im Breisgau. There he studied for his degree Jura , but switched temporarily to the University of Heidelberg .
He was interested in politics early on and was an active representative of the people in political life. Emil Thoma also worked as a consultant for the municipal theater commission in Freiburg.
Emil Thoma liked to hike in the Black Forest . In 1903 he was elected President of the Black Forest Association. In addition to expanding the hiking routes over the mountains and through the valleys of the Black Forest, he campaigned for nature and environmental protection as early as the beginning of the 20th century.
On May 24, 1913, he was elected Lord Mayor of Freiburg and succeeded Otto Winterer . Today a school in Freiburg bears his name (Emil-Thoma-Schule on Schützenallee). The Emil-Thoma hiking trails on the Kandel and in Hinterzarten were also named after him.
