The Emscher Landscape Park near Dortmund

The Emscher Landscape Park is a regional park in the northern Ruhr area . It is a regional cooperation project to create a coherent park system. Due to the industrial and montane past of the region, the natural landscape of the Ruhr area is heavily populated, fragmented, changed many times and destroyed in some places. The aim of the landscape park is to create a new type of park that combines different open spaces: areas of the preserved pre-industrial cultural landscape , areas of the regional green corridors defined since 1920 , industrial landscape and post-industrial landscape.

The concept of the Emscher Landscape Park was developed during the Emscher Park International Building Exhibition . The Emscher Landscape Park, which is being created over an area of around 450 km 2 , takes up the idea of the seven "regional green corridors" from the 1920s and links the district parks that were created in the 1970s . The concept, in which 20 cities and two districts are involved, comprises a total of 178 completed projects and 248 current or future individual projects. The more recent development of the Emscher Landscape Park is documented in the ELP 2010 master plan , which was drawn up by the 20 participating cities and regional institutions from 2002 to 2005. He defines the area of the park, compiles an overview of the projects and names the main themes of development (New Emschertal, location, ecology, infrastructure, culture, urban agriculture and forestry, development and vegetation management). The concept was awarded the National Prize for Integrated Urban Development and Building Culture by the Federal Ministry of Transport in 2009 .

The reconstruction of the area should be completed by 2020.
