Emschertal Museum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Emschertal Museum of the city of Herne consists of three locations: Strünkede Castle , Municipal Gallery in Strünkede Castle Park and the Wanne-Eickel Museum of Local History and Natural History . It is one of the largest regional museums in the Ruhr area and shows extensive collections on local history , natural history and art . The first museum director, Karl Brandt, laid the foundation stone for the collections. Above all things of daily use such as coins, locks, stoves and ceramics, armor, rifles and other weapons, cupboards, chests, tables and chairs, peasant beds and other objects of home decor from the times of the Middle Ages to industrial change as well as sand and sun -, mechanical clocks and precision devices from the 17th and 18th centuries make the living conditions in the Emscher region tangible.

In 1937 the city of Herne leased parts of the castle from Harpener Bergbau AG for the Emschertal Museum on a long-term basis. The opening of the first smaller exhibition took place on September 15, 1938, interrupted by smaller periods of closure due to the war, to close on August 26, 1944. After the liberation and stationing of an occupation until January 1946, the castle was converted into a children's rest home for the British Salvation Army . It was not until 1948 that the city of Herne bought the house and the Emschertal Museum reopened in some rooms. In addition to the local history exhibits, natural history finds as well as exhibits on the history of the castle and the noble von Strünkede family are on display. From October 2009 to April 2010 the castle was closed to visitors due to renovation work. The permanent exhibition of the Emschertal Museum was reopened after moving back in mid-June 2010.

Municipal gallery

The municipal gallery in the castle park is an Art Nouveau villa belonging to the last castle owners, von Forell, from the end of the 19th century. It has been showing the art holdings of the Emschertal Museum since 1978, which deal with art in the 20th century, including works regionally and internationally (Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall) by famous artists of naturalism , expressionism and object-related works. The regional artist groups include the “Herner Künstler” founded in 1949 (painters such as Bruno Foltynowicz , Lothar Gambke and Jupp Gesing ), the “young west” group founded in Recklinghausen in 1948 (painters such as Gustav Deppe , Emil Schumacher and Thomas Grochowiak ) and the artist group "B 1" (Landart artists such as Bernd Damke , Rolf Glasmeier , Kuno Gonschior , Friedrich Gräsel ), whose members refer strongly to the industrial culture of the Ruhr area.

In the last few decades in particular, a 3500-sheet collection of contemporary art after 1945 has been brought together, which is unique far beyond the Ruhr area.

On the one hand, the Städtische Galerie repeatedly shows temporary exhibitions from the museum's holdings, on the other hand, it also shows cultural-historical compilations such as "Möbel en détail" (1995, on home decor), "Pest im Ruhrgebiet" (1998) and "Ente gut, alles gut" (2008, to the comic world of Duckburg). The studio gallery on the top floor is used for educational activities, performances and small exhibitions.

Wanne-Eickel Local History and Natural History Museum

Founded as a local history museum by interested citizens in 1926 when the town was founded by Wanne-Eickel , after several moves and an eventful history, the museum is now housed in the former elementary school in the “Unser Fritz” district. It shows exhibits from the working world of mining, inland shipping and transport companies as well as domestic life in the Ruhr area and natural history finds from the surrounding area.

Library

The administration building in Schlosspark Strünkede contains the library of the Emschertal Museum with more than 20,000 publications, including monographs, journals and encyclopedias as well as exhibition catalogs from other museums. The pure reference library is available to all citizens free of charge.
