Emst is the name of a district of the independent city Hagen in the eastern Ruhr area . In 2018 Emst had 10,719 inhabitants.

history

Emst was first mentioned with Gelo de Einhurst in 1050 in a list of goods and income from the Benedictine and imperial abbey of Werden, with an annual landlord levy of 18 pfennigs. Later Emst is mentioned in a document in 1313 as Emhorst , 1397 as Einhorst and 1414 as Emhorn . The name changed via Emoest and Eimest until the current short form Emst was mentioned for the first time in a trademark inspection protocol in 1656 .

It can be safely assumed that the name Emst or Einhorst is older than the documents received today. Therefore, it remains open whether the name Einhorst is to be interpreted as the name of a single farm in the sense of a solitary eyrie standing on a steep mountain edge.

The term Emst was referring to the beginning of the 20th century to the farms and their lands, which you could find today's Altemst in the area and the peasantry Eppenhausen belonged. Further settlement did not begin until it was incorporated into the city of Hagen (1901) and the company Gartenvorstadt Emst GmbH was founded (1911).

From a geological point of view, Emst lies on a larger plateau formed by the mass limestone . There is practically no surface water on the plateau. Coming from the east, the mass limestone range extends from the Hönnetal via Iserlohn , Letmathe and Hohenlimburg to the Volmehang (border between Hagen-Emst and Hagen city center) and continues from Schwelm via Wülfrath and the Neandertal further west. The course of the mass limestone course between Hagen and Schwelm was interrupted by the so-called Ennepesterror , a geological fault. Bulk limestone and especially dolomite are valuable, minable types of rock that have always been and are still being quarried in a large number of quarries. In a large quarrying Dolomitwerk , which lies between the areas and Ernst Hohenlimburg is dolomite , a magnesium-containing special character of Massenkalkes degraded. This dolomite is z. B. required for the production of firebricks . The dolomite quarry is the topographically deepest point in the surrounding area due to mining, which causes hydrological problems (lowering of the groundwater). Other limestone quarries in Emst that are now closed: Quarries to the left and right of the "waterless valley" and quarries at Elmenhorst and Staplack.

When it was formed about 360 million years ago, this mass limestone was a barrier reef in a shallow marginal sea between today's northern Europe and the drifting southern rest of Europe, which dried up with the unfolding of the Variscan mountains in the area of today's Sauerland . With the subsequent karstification of the mass limestone, carbonated surface water penetrated through crevices and cracks, which later expanded into corridors and caves. Keyword: [Speleogenesis]; On the Emster plateau itself, however, there are practically no known large caves as a large part of the mass limestone is covered by layers of clay and loess, which make karstification more difficult. There are only a few small and large caves in the outskirts, i.e. on the Volmehang in relation to Emst. The most notable here is the Volmehang cave system, consisting of the Volmehang cave, Martinsloch and Volmetal cave, which is located behind and below the Hagen town hall.

Today Emst is one of the preferred residential areas in Hagen, which is close to the city, but is largely spared from through traffic (apart from the federal motorway 45 which runs past the edge ) and has almost purely residential development. Two small shopping centers are located between Altemst and Emsterfeld at the Protestant church, and on the eastern edge of the large housing estate Emsterfeld. Emst has its own weekly market. The market square is also used as a parking lot and for flea markets. The Emster sports club SC Concordia Hagen organizes the Emster fun run every year on Ascension Day. This is considered to be very demanding among runners due to its altitude profile.

From 1924 to 1935 Heinrich König was vicar in Emst. Under him, the small Heilig-Geist-Kirche was built in 1926 , today's parish home of the Catholic community (since 2002 Heinrich-König-Haus ).

The Art Nouveau Villa Hohenhof is significant .
