Endless groove

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term continuous groove (English "locked groove") refers to a technique in which records pressure , in which a plate groove is pressed so that they almost circular runs back into itself, that is not as usual spiral continues inside.

Basically all records have a run-out groove that is fed back into itself. However, this is usually mute, i.e. it does not contain an audio signal. The Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band from 1967 was the first record to have a very psychedelic sounding noise in the run-out groove on the second side , which is repeated endlessly until you finally turn off the record player. After that, different bands sporadically repeated this technique for various reasons, often to e.g. B. to be able to artistically interrupt a song that extends over more than one side of the record.

In the techno sector, too , the technology found its way into the production of records exclusively for DJs , whereby it was not used at the end, but records were made that only consisted of countless such endless grooves that could then be used for mixing. In this scene , the term “killer loop” is used more often, actually a term used by the surfers that describes a particularly dangerous looping for them . Loop is also a term from electronic music that describes a recurring sound pattern. “Killer” here refers to the effect that the monotony of the sound has on the listener.

The length of such a loop results from the respective playback speed of the record:

  • at 33 1 / 3  min -1 = 1.8 s (corresponds to a beat frequency of 133 min -1 to the duration of a 4 / 4 - clock )
  • at 45 min −1 = 1 13  s (corresponds exactly to a 44 cycle with a beat frequency of 180 min −1 )
