Endspiel (Original title: End Game ) is an English-language documentary short film by the filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman . It was produced by Netflix and is about patients and doctors and how they deal with death.

Final was at the Oscars 2019 in the category Best Short Documentary nominated.

The documentary shows dying patients from two hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area in the last days of their lives, their doctors and family members, and how they deal with their impending death.

One of the focus of the film is 45-year-old Mitra, who is being treated as a cancer patient at the University of California's San Francisco Medical Center . Her husband Hamid and her mother Vaji as well as the treating doctors and nurses and how each individual deals with the imminent death of Mitra are also shown.

Another patient is Pat Harris, who also has cancer and is spending his last days at the Zen Hospice Project . The founder of the project, BJ Miller, is portrayed, making his mission to experience the end of life as part of life and not purely medical, tangible.

The film was first shown at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018 . From May 4, 2018, it was available on the Internet via Netflix.

Endspiel was nominated for the award in the “Best Documentary Short” category at both the Sundance Film Festival and the 2019 Academy Awards.
