The Enz (also: Enzbach ) is a 37.9 km long, orographically right tributary of the Prüm in the Eifel .

geography

The Enz rises about 650 meters south-southwest of Lichtenborn at 544  m above sea level. NHN . The source area is on the Arzfeld plateau . From here it initially flows primarily in a south-south-west direction and after about 150 meters of flow it reaches the municipality of Arzfeld . It flows further in a south-southwest direction through Arzfeld. Above the Arzfeldermühle , the Enz is dammed into a small lake. A little below the mill, the Enz, now flowing in a southerly direction, forms the municipal boundary between Kickeshausen and Arzfeld, and further south between Jucken and Emmelbaum . This is where the Neuerburg Enz Valley begins . On its way to Neuerburg , the Enz now turns in a south-easterly direction. After passing the villages of Enztalhof , Engelsdorf , Zweifelscheid , Weidendell and Beyerhof , the Enz reaches the village of In der Enz , where the Wahlbach flows into the Enz on the right.

A little later the Enz reaches Neuerburg . At the former mills, the water of the Enz falls over a waterfall. Below, the Enz continues on its way south-east, making several loops. After flowing past Daudistel, the Enz crosses the municipal boundary to Sinspelt . The Radenbach , the largest tributary of the Enz , flows into the northern outskirts on the right-hand side . Flowing further in south-eastern directions, the Enz passes Mettendorf , Enzen and Schankweiler . Below Schankweiler, the Enz turns in a distinctive loop to the east before reaching Holsthum at 189  m above sea level. NHN flows into the Prüm on the right .

On its 37.9 km long path, the Enz overcomes an altitude difference of 355 m, which corresponds to an average bed gradient of 9.4 per thousand. The 148.5 km² catchment area is drained to the North Sea via Prüm, Sauer , Mosel and Rhine .

Tributaries

Numerous, mostly very short, watercourses flow to the Enz from the heights. The most important tributary is the 12.2 km long Radenbach . In the following, the tributaries of the Enz are named as they are managed by the Rhineland-Palatinate water management authority.

environment

Up to the mouth of the Radenbach, the Enz is one of the coarse-material, siliceous low mountain streams (type 5) and further on it is one of the fine to coarse-material rich, silicate low mountain rivers (type 9).

The structure of the water in the Arzfeld area is given as very much to completely changed. In the further course to Neuerburg, the classification is mainly given as significantly to heavily changed, with some sections above Doubtscheid showing a significantly better structural quality with slightly to moderately changed. In the area of the Neuerburg location, the watercourse has been completely changed. Below Neuerburg, the structural quality is mainly given as moderately to significantly changed, although there are both a few short sections with better and poorer structural quality.

The water quality from Arzfeld onwards is given as low pollution. In the section from Neurath to Neuerburg, the water quality is given as moderately polluted and from Neuerburg to the estuary as slightly polluted.

Traffic routes

The former Pronsfeld -Arzfeld-Neuerburg ( Enztalbahn ), a branch line of the Westeifelbahn, runs through the upper Enz valley . After the closure in 1989, the tracks were removed and the route was partially converted into a cycle path. The cycle path from Pronsfeld to Neuerburg has been paved throughout since the end of 2011.
