Orders

The Eoacanthocephala are a class of scratchworms with an obligatory change of host , which as fully grown intestinal parasites parasitize almost exclusively in fish and usually have aquatic life cycles. These are mostly very small species with an average length of a few millimeters.

features

As with the Archiacanthocephala , the females have a dorsal and a ventral ligament sac in the pseudocoel , the walls of which do not dissolve in contrast to those of the Palaeacanthocephala . Protonephridia are absent. The main trunks of the epidermal lacunae system are dorsal and ventral , while the representatives of the palaeacanthocephala lie laterally , i.e. on the sides of the body. The males only have one large cement gland . There are several very large cell nuclei in the ligament .

Way of life

The Eoacanthocephala have an aquatic life cycle. The final hosts are mainly fish, but amphibians and reptiles are less common as hosts. The animals mainly use small crustaceans as intermediate hosts , here preferably various mussel crabs (Ostracoda), and aquatic insect larvae. For example, Neoechinorhynchos rutili parasitizes in various freshwater fish , including the Rutilus species, while the larvae ( Acanthor ) attack mussel crabs and mud fly larvae.
