Epke Jan Zonderland (born April 16, 1986 in Lemmer ) is a Dutch gymnast .

Zonderland claims to have started gymnastics at the age of four, after his sister Geeske (* 1981) and his brothers Herre (* 1983) and Johan (* 1984) did it. His brothers also ran for the Dutch national team. Since injuries before the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , Zonderland began to concentrate on parallel bars and horizontal bars . In Beijing, he finished seventh in the bar finals.

After winning two silver medals at world championships (2009 and 2010) and the European championship title in 2011 on his parade device, he won the Olympic gold medal on the horizontal bar at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London . It was the first Olympic medal in men's gymnastics for the Netherlands. Zonderland showed an error-free performance with a high degree of difficulty (7.9), which included three twists in a row and in the end earned him a score of 16.533 points. A year later he succeeded in winning the title on the horizontal bar for the first time at the World Championships in Antwerp .

In 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013 he was voted Sportsman of the Year in the Netherlands .

With a height of 1.73 meters, Zonderland's competition weight is 68 kilograms. He lives in Heerenveen , where he is a member of the Turncentrum Sportstad Heerenveen (TSH) and is trained by Daniel Knibbeler. In addition to sports, Zonderland is studying medicine at the University of Groningen . He successfully completed his medical degree in 2018. Zonderland's nickname is "The Flying Dutchman" .
