Epworth (Zimbabwe)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Epworth is a suburb of Harare in Zimbabwe with 167,462 inhabitants (2012 census). It is located 20 km southeast of the capital at an altitude of 1,509 m, is one of the poorest and fastest growing settlements on the periphery of this agglomeration and belongs to the Harare province .

Epworth is an example of " urban farmland ". Agricultural products are grown in front of most of the houses. People are looking for work in the city, but they don't want to give up their rural roots. This increases the infrastructure costs and allows the place to grow quickly. At the same time, water bills in the amount of 16.5 million ZW dollars (as of March 2006) were not paid and therefore pipes were shut down, which is why human rights groups protested massively with reference to the right to health. The living and housing conditions are miserable. The “houses” mostly consist of little more than a few boards with plastic sheeting. The problem of AIDS orphans is great, as is that of child malnutrition. Aid organizations are involved in this social hotspot.
