Erhard Ueckermann (born March 3, 1924 in Neu Krakow , Pomerania Province ; † September 5, 1996 ) was a German hunting and forestry scientist who enjoyed international recognition. From 1957 to 1989 he was head of the Research Center for Hunting and Game Damage Prevention for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Bonn .

Life

Erhard Ueckermann comes from an old Prussian forest ranger family. Born as the son of a forest ranger in the Neu Krakow forest district, he discovered his love for forest and game at an early age while on stalking walks with his father.

After graduating from high school in World War II , he registered as a war volunteer and served in the Air Force , most recently with the paratroopers .

When he lost his homeland Pomerania after the end of the war, he started in 1945 at the forestry faculty of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in Hann. Münden to study forest sciences. After graduation, the Great Forest State Examination followed in 1951 and in the same year also the doctorate with Fritz Nüßlein with the dissertation thesis The effect of the location on the body weight and horn formation of the forest deer . With this, the young scientist had found the topic that would occupy him full-time for his entire life: local game , its hunting and herding . From 1952 to 1957 Ueckermann was entrusted with questions of game damage prevention at the Kuratorium für Waldarbeit und Forsttechnik (KWF) in Hamburg .

In 1957 he moved to Bonn to the Research Center for Hunting and Game Damage Prevention in North Rhine-Westphalia, which he headed until 1989. This on October 1, 1957 as a private foundation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and the State Hunting Association was housed in the forester's house Hardt and was nationalized in 1976. Since then it has been an institution of the state in accordance with the State Hunting Act of North Rhine-Westphalia. The research center has been part of the Association of German Forest Research Centers since 1962. It is primarily Ueckermann's merit that this institution became a household name in hunting circles at home and abroad. This was achieved primarily through the series of publications by the Research Center for Hunting and Game Damage Prevention, published by the renowned hunting and forestry specialist publisher Paul Parey . Dr. Uecker man wrote it posts on the management especially of hoofed game - roe deer, deer , fallow deer and sika deer - as well as the wild boar . Most of these publications, for which his wife Anneliese Ueckermann also often contributed drawings, were widely distributed thanks to their practical relevance and saw several editions.

Ueckermann's main work was the monograph Das Damwild , written together with chief forester Paul Hansen . Naturgeschichte, Hege und Jagd (1968), which was awarded the DJV Literature Prize in 1969 and is still considered a standard work today (2007) (the third, revised edition appeared in 1994).

In addition to his numerous publications, Ueckermann also made an active travel and lecturing activity known far beyond the borders of North Rhine-Westphalia. From 1973 onwards, together with Professor Fritz Nüßlein, he published the internationally recognized journal for hunting science , the editorial management and supervision of which has since been part of the research center. In 1978 he founded the subsequent annual lecture event "Bonner Jägertage" as an encounter between hunting practice and hunting science. He was also appointed to a large number of specialist committees and advisory boards. On the initiative of Ueckermann, the “Working Group for Wildlife Biology and Hunting Research Centers” was formed on October 31, 1968 in Beuel. In 1978 he took over from Nüßlein as chairman of the Federal Republic of Germany group in the International Ring of Hunting Scientists. In 1976, Dr. Ueckermann's commitment to game was honored with the award of the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .

After his retirement in 1989 he devoted himself more to his hunting history and hunting culture interests. This resulted in his last work, Kulturgut Jagd. A guide through the hunting history of North Rhine-Westphalia and hunting historical sites (1994). In addition, in 1990 he was one of the founders of the “ Society for Organics eV ”, which is committed to establishing the concept of sustainability in all areas of life.

Forester Dr. Erhard Ueckermann died after a serious illness on September 5, 1996 at the age of 72.
