Eric Michael Garcetti (born February 4, 1971 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician and mayor of Los Angeles since July 2013 . He belongs to the Democratic Party .

Career

Prior to his political career, Garcetti taught at the University of Southern California and was assistant professor of diplomacy and international relations at Occidental College . From 2001 Garcetti held a seat on the Los Angeles City Council as a representative of the 13th electoral district , in 2006 he was elected chairman. In 2011 he announced he was trying to succeed Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa , who was no longer allowed to run for two terms. In the first round of elections in March 2013, Eric Garcetti received a relative majority of almost 33%, and in May he won the runoff election with 54.9% against his challenger Wendy Greuel (also a Democratic Party). On July 1, 2013, Garcetti took office as the youngest mayor of Los Angeles in over a century. In March 2017 he was re-elected as mayor with 81% of the vote.

Before his actual election in 2013, Garcetti played the Mayor of Los Angeles in two episodes of the television series The Closer and one episode of Major Crimes .
