Eric Gujer (actually Erik Gujer; born July 24, 1962 in Zurich ; resident in Volketswil ) is a Swiss journalist and author . He has been editor-in-chief of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) since March 2015 .

Life

After graduating from high school, Gujer completed an internship at the German daily Mannheimer Morgen from 1982 to 1984 . Gujer then studied history , political science and Slavic studies at the Universities of Freiburg im Breisgau and Cologne .

He started working for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung in 1986 as an intern and freelancer. From 1989 to 1992 he was a correspondent in the GDR and the new federal states , from 1992 to 1995 in Israel , from 1995 to 1998 in Moscow for the Commonwealth of Independent States and from 1998 Germany correspondent in Berlin . From July 2013 to March 2015, he was head of the NZZ's international department. He has been editor-in-chief of NZZ since March 11, 2015 and is also responsible for the management of NZZ AG together with CEO Felix Graf.

He is married to the journalist , author and NZZ columnist Claudia Schwartz .

Political guidelines

Gujer regards the NZZ as the leading medium in Switzerland, as he emphasized in an interview with Weltwoche . It shapes the political and social debates in the country. The NZZ should represent a bourgeois-liberal point of view that stands up for the rights of the individual . “Newspapers that are random in their attitude have no future,” said Gujer when he took office. At the same time, he considers it the task of the NZZ to offer voices from different political camps a platform: "Without the dispute, in which one treats the other person with respect, the public matter withers."

He regards an increasingly confrontational tone in the public debate with concern and calls for people to remain able to communicate across rifts and to “put the polarizing forces in their place with their enemy images”. In view of the heated opinion climate, the media have a special task. You are the authority that can examine and classify facts. That is why credibility is so important in journalism and the top priority for the NZZ. This also includes the willingness to be self-critical. He told Der Spiegel magazine that the media industry had to become more honest with itself: “Are we really willing to consider the pros and cons? Are we ready to question our own attitude? "

Under his aegis, media observers attest to a shift in the NZZ's political profile to the right , with Gujer primarily targeting Germany and AfD supporters there. Gujer himself denies this and speaks of “profile sharpening” and of the fact that the increase in digital subscriptions in Germany is primarily due to middle-class readers.

NZZ projects

In June 2016, Gujer introduced NZZ Global Risk . The premium newsletter is intended to help Swiss SMEs to assess the influence of political developments on their company by means of weekly risk analyzes by foreign correspondents . The offer is supplemented by an annual conference on the opportunities and risks of a specific country region.

In addition, Gujer drove the establishment of the NZZ in Germany . Since April 2017 he has been writing the weekly Germany newsletter The Other Look , which is part of the NZZ offer for Germany, NZZ Perspective , launched in July 2017 .

Gujer is a book author on intelligence issues and German foreign policy. He is a member of the German Intelligence Service discussion group and was consulted as a strategy expert by the Swiss Federal Intelligence Service .
