Athletic career

Soccer player

After the end of the Second World War , Erich Blanke was one of the football players who revived football in Halle (Saale) . His team was called SG Halle-Glaucha , which won the Halle district championship in 1947. After the Soviet occupation forces allowed the expansion of the sports competitions, the sports association, renamed Freiimfelde Halle, became 1948 Saxony-Anhalt champions . The Halle residents were thus qualified for the 1st Eastern Zone Championship. The SG Freiimfelde Halle reached the final, but lost 0-1 to SG Planitz without their striker Blanke . In 1949 the Halle residents, now competing as ZSG Union Halle, were again in the east zone finals . The 34-year-old Blanke was called up this time as the left wing runner and left the field as the new east zone champion after a 4-1 victory over Fortuna Erfurt .

As the defending champion, the ZSG Union was entitled to start the first season of the newly established East German Zone League , with which the football champions were determined in the future. Erich Blanke was also part of the Halle squad for the season that started in September 1949. He was used for the first time on the third day of the league and also played the following eight league games. On November 29, 1949, he completed his last league game for Union Halle.

coach

After the end of his career as a football player, Blanke worked as a football coach. From 1952 to 1953 he was a coach at the GDR upper division Stahl Thale . First he worked in the 1952/53 season as an assistant coach for the league team, five games before the end of the season he took over the training of the first team, which was sixth in the league at the time, instead of the 64-year-old Paul Kugler . By the end of the season he improved the team to fifth place. In the 1953/54 season Blanke was only responsible for the first two point games of the Thaler league team as a coach, then he had to hand over the coaching post to Gerhard Thierfelder. Then Blanke was a junior coach at BSG Stahl Helbra and led the junior team in the summer of 1954 to the GDR junior championship.
