Erik-Jan Zürcher

Erik-Jan Zürcher (born March 15, 1953 in Leiden ) is professor of Turkish language and culture at the University of Leiden .

Life

Zürcher is the son of Erik Zürcher (1928–2008), former professor for the history of East Asia at the University of Leiden. He studied Arabic, Turkish and New Persian and was then a lecturer at the then Catholic University of Nijmegen . In 1984 he received his doctorate with the work The Unionist Factor. The Role of the Committee of Union and Progress in the Turkish National Movement (1905-1926). He wrote the book Turkey. A Modern History (first published in 1993) and translated it into Dutch (first published in 1995). This book has also been translated into Turkish ( Modernleşen Türkiye'nin Tarihi , numerous editions), Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Italian and Indonesian.

An updated version in English was published in 2003. In June 2005, Zürcher received the 'Medal of High Distinction' from the then Turkish Ambassador Tacan Ildem as a token of recognition for his publications on the history of Turkey. In May 2016 he returned the medal and distanced himself from his earlier view that Turkey could become a member of the EU .

From April 2008 to November 2012, Zurich was director of the International Institute for Social History (IISG) in Amsterdam. He is a frequent guest on television and radio shows.
